Buhari Declare a State of Emergency now and let the Military take over - Robert Clarke [SAN]
Senior Advocate of Nigeria Robert Clarke while speaking on a Channels Television Programme, "Sunday Politic" expressed fear over the security issue in Nigeria, he stressed that the country is on the brink of collapse and that the situation is worse than during Shehu Shagari led government of 1982
“Nigeria is worse than it was in 1982 when Shehu Shagari was the president. The country was by far better in 1982 than today, 2021. Do you know what the cause is? The leadership we have today.
“The situation of Nigeria is that the people who should know don’t want to know and don't want to learn. The security section just talks and talk and talk, are they really doing anything? The security situation in this country today is so bad that I, its difficult to guarantee Nigeria will still exist in another six months.
He also noted that most of the problems were created by greedy politicians who took advantage of Sani Abacha loots
“The problems are so immense and it's these same politicians since 1999 constitution came in to be that manufactured them and this set of politicians, young boys then, who were enjoying Sani Abacha’s loot. They were also trying to form as many political parties for him, they got into money and came into politics, Nigeria has never been the same.
On possible solutions to avert the possible collapse, Mr Robert Clarke has this to say
“Here are my solutions: Nigeria has to be changed from what it is today and the only way to do that is to create a state (of emergency) that will make the 1999 constitution unruly. A state of emergency has to be created in Nigeria immediately.
“How do we do it? Under the Nigerian constitution, the President, as the commander-in-chief has the power to delegate all his chief powers to the chief of defence staff. Let him then talk to the president of the Senate, the Speaker of the house and all the governors and let them know a state of emergency is going to be declared in Nigeria, which means all Governors, Legislators must go.
“The military will now set up six geographical zones that we trust in our hearts, still exists but let’s start on that. Allow military governance over those states. I can assure you, the day Nigeria is released to six states, and there is a state of emergency, 80% of the money being spent on governance will be returned to the treasury. Then, we can sit and rejig Nigeria, let all the states control their internal resources.”
